Tonka Snow Removal

While the snow continues to come and all in the homestead are anxious for the first signs of spring, we’re constantly looking for new sources of amusement to pass the winter days and make the most of the weather.

Despite having to be packaged like he’s 19th century china being shipped overseas via “Turbulence Air” airlines, my son enjoys getting out in the snow. The venerable Tonka’s were called out to assist in snow removal. Happy to say, they did a fine job. Though, I suspect a union grievance is currently being filed. The little guy work’s his trucks hard.

What good is collecting GI Joe’s if you don’t get them out in the fresh air and elements for a little fun. They, just like the rest of us, start crawling the walls if they’re cooped up too long.

For over 30 years I’ve been going to Walraven’s in Harrison, MI while on vacation. A great little fruit market in town with home grown seasonal fruits and veggies. My parents used to take us kids to the ice cream parlor that was attached to, and part of,  the fruit market for their generously scooped ice cream cones.
I remember Walraven’s as it was a first stop in town (right after visiting Ashcraft’s, to stock up on groceries) upon arriving for to begin summer vacation. There, we would select the fresh fruits and vegetables for our weeks stay. I was around 11/12 at the time. This initial trip always consisted of one of their generous ice cream cones.  Throughout the week, a few more trips were required to sample the many flavors offered.  I remember the son’s owner (Tim, who was around my age) working daily in his parents business at various chores.  I thought that was cool.  To be able to work along side your father at your family’s business in a vacation town appealed to me.

My wife and son vacation in the same area as I did when I was a boy.  And, the tradition of frequenting Walraven’s to stock up on fruits and veggies for the two weeks we’ll be there, continues.  (They, also, have a wonderful variety of cheeses.)  And, of course, this always includes a scoop or two of ice cream.

Tradition, also, continues with the family run business.  Today, the Tim and his wife run the business.  And, their son, is frequently seen working daily at various chores
Great place, great people.
